Design and Installation Considerations

Designing and planning green roofs and modular green walls means "getting it right" to ensure long term success and safety to building structures

Aesthetic & Environmental Factors

Selection of roof and wall areas which have attractive aspects and outlooks are incorporated, where possible, into the design phase of the building. We give prime consideration to environmental factors including sun aspect, prevailing winds and shadows and the impact of adjacent structures and buildings.

Weight loading

We determine the load bearing strength of existing or required structural components, to support the weight of saturated growing media and plant species. Specifically formulated high water holding capacity, 'ultra lightweight' growing media is utilised to minimise weight bearing loads on building structures. Growing media type and depth is specified to complement selected plant species.

Waterproofing Membranes

Comprehensive and secure waterproofing is essential for the long term safety of the building. Green Roof Technologies offer a 20 year warranty and utilises only high quality, UV, rot and root resistant membranes on green roofs. Installed only by experienced contractors, means "fail safe" membrane performance.

Drainage

High strength drainage cells, that also protect the membrane, are used in green roof applications to ensure that excess water is efficiently captured and transported eliminating water-logging or flooding of intensive green roof areas. Water retention and drainage trays are utilised to capture and retain water for re-use on extensive green roofs and also allow excess water to pass to drainage outlets.

Rainwater Harvesting

We specify, where appropriate, high strength modular sub-surface water storage tanks that allow captured water to be re-used to irrigate plants when necessary

Maintenance

Low maintenance attractive plant species are selected along with allowance for practical access for maintenance and the removal of periodic vegetative waste. If required, maintenance contracts incorporating proactive programs, to meet individual project requirements, are offered to manage installed green roofs and modular green wall projects.

Plant Selection

A diverse range of plant species may be specified to meet the design parameters of the both green roofs and modular green walls Colour, screening ability, adaptability to growing media, irrigation regimes and local environmental conditions are all considered. Careful selection is made where plants will be subjected to wind prone, shady or high sun exposed areas.
